Following today's qualifying at the Talladega Superspeedway, Juan Pablo Montoya found himself in the first position of the starting grid for tomorrow's Amp Energy Juice 500 race. The pole is not a very familiar position for the Colombian, who only managed two other similar feats this season.
Montoya will be the number one in the pack tomorrow after he managed to complete the 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway track in 51.863 seconds, at speeds of 184.640 mph. Runner up for tomorrow's race is Clint Bowyer. The remaining three drivers in the top five for Sunday's race are Kurt Busch, Joe Nemechek and Jeff Burton.
The good position for tomorrow secured by Montoya fell however in the background, following the announcement of a sad moment for the series. Jim Hunter, vice president of NASCAR Corporate Communications, passed away after fighting cancer for the past year. Montoya dedicated the pole to the late executive.
"With the loss of Jim, everyone was a good friend of him," Juan Pablo Montoya said after qualifying for the first position for tomorrow's Amp Energy Juice 500 Talladega race. "He was such a good person. I'm really going to miss him. It really sucks. It's nice to get the pole here in his memory."
"Everything about him was always fun.” he added after the qualifying session. “It was always fun to be around him. He was a great guy and great golf partner. We played a lot of golf together and shared a lot of moments together. He was fun, and it's been really hard on us, but he moved to a better place."
