Monaco Tops "Seven Sporting Wonders of the World"

Monaco seems to hold a special place in the British sport fans' hearts when it comes to favorite international sporting venues. According to the “Barclays Seven Sporting Wonders of the World” survey, no less that 18 percent of all questioned British fans revealed that the host of the famous Monaco Grand Prix was their favorite destination outside of the United Kingdom.

The Monaco Grand Prix is considered one of the living symbols of the Formula 1 championship, as it joins the other famous Indianapolis 500 race and Le Mans 24 Hour race in what is called the Triple Crown of Motorsport.

The British fans should be very glad to know – if they don't already – that fellow countryman Graham Hill is the only racer to have completed the Triple Crown in the past, having won each of the famous aforementioned races. However, he is listed as the second most winningest F1 driver at Monaco (5 wins), after Ayrton Senna's record 6 wins.

The circuit has been part of European motor racing ever since 1929, and was included in every F1 series since 1955. The race in Monaco is organized by the Automobile Club de Monaco, with work on the circuit's grandstands and other infrastructure elements starting 6 weeks before the Monaco Grand Prix.

Second overall in British fans' view was the famous Camp Nou stadium – home of the Barcelona football team – the largest football structure in Europe. The Spanish arena was followed by the world's largest steel structure, the newly-constructed Olympic stadium in Beijing. Santiago Bernabeu, San Siro and Maracana were also part of the “Seven Wonders of the World”.
