We've lost count of the rumors talking about Porsche bringing back the 928 as a flagship coupe based on the Panamera. In fact, the German automaker mentioned the idea of a revival was still on the table last summer. Nevertheless, given the current trends of the industry, an electric platform might be the best option, and this rendering showcases just that.
As highlighted by the German automaker, the company relies on three pillars for meeting the ever-stricter emission standards: EVs, hybrids, and synthetic fuels. And if we think of the iconic 911, a hybrid version has already been confirmed (this will be brought by the upcoming 992.2 mid-cycle revamp), while the research Porsche is undertaking in the field of synthetic fuels should also help keep the flat-six engine on the road.

However, with a grand tourer such as the modern 928 we're discussing here, battery power seems like the most viable approach.

As for the platform that could underpin such a model, the J1 architecture that serves the Taycan, as well as its Audi sibling, the upcoming 2021 e-tron GT, is not the only option.

You see, the two German automakers are currently developing an all-electric architecture called PPE. This Premium Platform Electric will underpin most medium-sized and large electric Audis coming this decade, as well as the next-generation Macan, among other Porsches.

Besides, with Porsche having opened up its design studios late last year, we were able to check out a multitude of never-before-seen prototypes, many of which relied on battery power, so it's clear that Zuffenhausen has already completed plenty of EV experiments.

Returning to the rendering sitting before us, this mixes the classic proportions of the 928 (remember, the 2+2 luxury grand tourer was built between 1977 and 1995) with elements borrowed from the automaker's current styling language, such as the front and rear light clusters.

And while the lower front fascia, as well as the wheels, might not be a perfect reminder of the Porsche identity (there seems to be a bit of Lamborghini in there), the all-glass roof pays homage to the 996- and 997-generation 911 Targa.

The mind behind the pixels? We're looking at the work of Scottish design student Euan McPherson, who graduated as a Product Design Engineer from the Glasgow School of Art and is currently completing a Master of Arts at the SPD Milan (the city's famous Polytechnic School of Design).
