Modern Pontiac GTO Looks Sleek, Shows Retro Styling Surprise

Given the exuberance that defines the contemporary muscle car realm, it's no wonder that many enthusiasts wish to see even more classic badges of the sort being revived. And the first step of such a process can be a rendering, as is the case with the Pontiac GTO pixel portrait we have here.

By the looks of it, we're dealing with a 2021 Pontiac GTO that aims to bring back the glory of a 1970 model. You see, the original (1964-1967 model years) GTO is credited for making the muscle car recipe famous by mixing a mid-sized platform with a massive V8 power, even though other American cars have attempted that decades before it.

However, GM introduced the second-gen GTO for 1968, with this featuring a curvier design that integrated fastback styling cues. While the A-body platform serving the model saw two-door models becoming shorter, lower and... slightly heavier, the vertical headlight arrangement was dropped in favor of a horizontal setup, while the front bumper went from a piece of chrome to a readily-deformable unit that was integrated into the body.

And the 1970 model that served as inspiration for this rendering received another important revamp, albeit with more subtle front end changes and a few handling updates.

As for the starting point of the pixel play, this is obviously a Dodge Challenger, in its latest range-topping Hellcat Redeye form.

And, before anybody jumps the "heresy" bandwagon, you should know there's a solid reason for using this Mopar machine rather than GM hardware for the rendering. Not only is the GTO retired, but the Pontiac brand had been put to sleep altogether.

As for the Camaro, even if we ignore the visually-unfortunate 2019MY facelift, which was addressed via the emergency 2020MY revamp, the Chevy's otherwise enticing retro-inspired design still comes second to that of the Challenger, at least as far as reviving the Golden Era styling is concerned.

And we can thank digital label Tuningcarps for portraying both ends of the "2021" Pontiac GTO, with the Instagram posts below allowing you to check out the steps of the transformation.
