Mitt Romney Promises Reevaluation of Efficiency Standards and EVs

Mitt Romney doesn`t really agree with the way the Obama administration has handled the idea of new and stricter fuel efficiency standards, as well as its outright support for EVs, virtually ignoring any other alternatives to just all-electric power.

His primary concern are the very stringent new CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards, which will force all automakers to achieve an average rating of 54.5 mpg by 2025, while afterward the target would increase by 4% annually.((Romney stated for The Detroit News that he would try and find “a better way of encouraging fuel economy”, and that he “would work with the manufacturers to find ways to encourage fuel economy on the part of the consumer. But trying to have the manufacturer push the product on the consumer -- that the consumer doesn't want -- is not the right approach."

He will have to face the NHTSA (National Highway Safety Administration), as well as the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), as both large institutions are in favor of the new CAFE standards, and thoroughly support them. Romney also mentioned that he does not agree with Obama’s support of EVs only, saying the policy doesn`t have to be this directed towards a specific technology,

Furthermore, he does not agree with the loans given to startup companies, like Tesla and Fisker, as well as the $25-billion program started by the Bush administration, which has so far loaned out $1.4-billion to Nissan, in order to build the Smyrna plant, as well as $5.9-billion to Ford, in order for the American giant to convert several plants for the production of parts for fuel-efficient vehicles - that means they still have $16-billion left to loan.
