Mitsubishi Will Recall 130,000 Lancer and Outlander Models For Auxiliary Systems Flaw

Recalls are like earthquakes. Once a big one takes place, other aftershocks will follow, at lower or equal intensity. Just ask Mitsubishi about it.

The Japanese manufacturer will perform a recall campaign split between two sessions, as requested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, involving Mitsubishi Lancer and Outlander models built between 2009 and 2011.

One of the two issues triggering the recalls includes the blower motor, which could fail. In case that happens, the performance of the windshield defroster could be reduced, diminishing the driver's visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.

As a result, Mitsubishi will recall certain model year 2009-2011 Lancer vehicles manufactured March 16, 2009, to March 30, 2011, 2010-2011 Lancer Sportback vehicles made June 17, 2009, to December 1, 2010, 2010-2011 Lancer Evolution vehicles produced July 14, 2009, to January 7, 2011.

In addition, the company will also call in 2009-2011 Outlanders made February 10, 2009, to June 22, 2011, and 2011 Outlander Sport vehicles manufactured August 26, 2010, to November 19, 2010.

The other issue behind the second recall campaign targets the electronic control unit (ECU) managing the headlights, taillights, and windshield wipers. The fault comes from a manufacturing error, and the unstable voltage could result in a malfunctioning of the above components, which could cause reduced visibility for the driver, while the car will also be difficult to spot by other traffic participants.

This affects 2009-2010 Mitsubishi Lancer vehicles manufactured January 12, 2009, to July 6, 2010, 2009-2010 Outlander cars made January 12, 2009, to August 27, 2010, 2010 Lancer Sportback vehicles built June 17, 2009, to June 8, 2010, and 2010 Lancer Evolution vehicles manufactured July 14, 2009, to August 4, 2010.

As it is customary, Mitsubishi will notify owners and replace the faulty components free of charge, but the Japanese brand didn't specify a notification schedule yet.
