Ever since the first Lancer Evolution came in 1992, the world of road-going rally-bred uber sedans would never be the same again. Together with its main rival - the Subaru Impreza WRX STI, this special breed of cars became a cheap alternative for experiencing supercar performance, but at a fraction of the cost.
It's a never-ending battle between Scooby fans and Lancer EVO enthusiasts, but can't we all agree that both models are mighty impressive? While the Subaru refreshed its rally-bred model and dropped the Impreza bit from its name, the Evolution X is at the end of its production life. But fret not because the Mitusbishi Lancer EVO X won't be put to sleep without a bang to remember.

Fans of the breed from the United States have been presented with the 2015 model year, but a special edition model will follow in a few months' time. It's basically a swan song model, a last hurrah, the zenith of the Lancer Evolution X. But its name will make some giggle - "Special Action Model." You heard that right! The last U.S.-spec batch of EVO X vehicles will be called that way.

Despite its weird name, Mitsubishi said it will give this model "extra horsepower and other performance improvements," without going into specifics. According to AutomotiveNews, some 2,000 to 2,500 examples of the breed will be built in the final six months of production. If our hunch is right, then the Japanese company might convert the U.K.-only FQ-440 MR for the U.S. market. The ultra exclusive special edition model developed for the U.K. was built in only 40 units and boats with a whopping 440 horsepower and 412 lb-ft available from 3,100 rpm. All from just a 2-liter turbo'd motor.

If Mitsubishi will work its magic and modify the EVO X FQ-440 MR for North America, then you'll be looking at an obscene price tag. Even so, it's almost certain the entire production run will sell like hot cakes. If you're curios what the future holds for the iconic nameplate, then take a look at the XR-PHEV Concept and the XR-PHEV Evolution Vision Gran Turismo Concept. Prepare for the unexpected.
