Mitsubishi signed an agreement with the PSA group, back in 2008, and the Japanese manufacturer started making and selling the Peugeot and Citroen versions of their i-MiEV. However, neither of those cars reached the kind of sales figures that the manufacturers were hoping for, so now they have been ‘canceled’.
With only 935 Peugeot iOns and 852 Citroen C-Zeros sold in the first half of the year, the decision seems motivate, since the original deal called for some 100,000 cars to be produced. These EV’s main downfall was their very high price, which started around the €30,000 mark, which seems steep for what is basically a kei car with an electric motor.
However, since the PSA group is developing its own green technology (the Hybrid4 system, fitted to the DS5 which we tested), perhaps they will develop their own EV, with their own technology. Also, it should be a matter of pride for PSA, as they are already considerably behind on the technology, when compared to the other French giant - Renault.
