Mitsubishi has to launch its Outlander PHEV crossover in the U.S., but this advanced crossover recently added an interesting new model for U.K. customers. Introduced at the CENEX 2014 Low Carbon Vehicle Event in Bedfordshire, U.K., the new Mitsubishi Outlander GX3h 4Work combines the benefits of a plug-in drivetrain with a stripped-out commercial vehicle.
In this case, the Outlander GX3h 4Work is classified as a commercial van by ditching the rear seats in favor of a flat load cargo area separated by a small partition behind the rear seats and covered in a removable thick rubber mat. The other obvious change made to the Outlander GX3h 4Work was for added security and privacy with the blocked out side windows behind the B-pillar and a metal cage installed inside the rear liftgate glass. This Outlander PHEV model also comes well-equipped with 18-inch wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel, fog lights, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, Bluetooth and remote keyless entry with push-button start.

The all-new Outlander GX3h 4Work continues to utilize Mitsubishi’s plug-in hybrid drivetrain giving the Outlander an all-electric driving range of 32.5 miles (52.3), and Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) providing push-button all-wheel drive. This unique combination of design and drivetrain allows the Outlander GX3h 4Work to carry the honor of being the U.K.’s first plug-in commercial 4x4 van. While the “van” label is loosely applied to this mid-size crossover, the good news for commercial buyers is that the Mitsubishi Outlander GX3h 4Work will cost just £23,373 ($38,067 U.S.) after all the price adjustments related to plug-in vehicles.

The Outlander Gx3h 4Work represents a significant cost reduction for companies running fleets of vans and independent businesses that need a reliable all conditions, all weather work-horse,” said Mike Thomas, general manager of product planning for Mitsubishi Motors in the U.K.

The CENEX Low Carbon Vehicle Event is held at Millbrook Proving Ground, and it features seminars regarding green vehicles and this year it provided an estimated 80 vehicles that people could experience for themselves in a ride and drive.
