The Mitsubishi Colt is dead, long live the new Mitsubishi Colt! We figured the Mirage is so boring that it needed a cool intro to ensure that at least a few of our readers can get to the end of this article.
As some of you may know, the Colt supermini was built in Europe but went out of production last year. Its replacement is designed from the start to be cheaper and less posh, so it's built in Thailand and imported.
As the model its making its way across all the major European markets, we have to announce UK pricing and availability for the Mirage.
The Mirage can transport up to five people and has a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine mated to a CVT in the top specs or a 1.0-liter with a manual for the more basic models. Thanks to fuel-saving systems like start-stop, it’s expected to offer a fuel consumption up to 3.5 l/100km (67 mpg UK), which isn't half bad.
At just over 3.7 meters, the Mirage is classed an A-segment car, or city car as we like to call them. Unlike the Colt which was a rival for the Fiesta, this is a bit like the Renault Twingo or VW Up! in terms of size.
Now that we know what it is, let's see what it costs. In the UK, three very simply named trim levels will be available, called Mirage 1, Mirage 2 and Mirage 3, with prices starting at £8,999 (€10,500).
The basic car has four airbags, ABS, EBD, electric windows only at the front, two speakers for the radio and CD player. If you want air conditioning, remote locking (yes, you have to put the key in otherwise), electrically adjustable mirrors and a rev counter, it will be £10,999 (€12,870).
If you want a really well equipped one, the £11,999 (€14,040) will also add 15-inch alloys, a leather know and steering wheel that look like they came from the '90, automatic zircon and fog lamps. Another £1,000 has to be added on top of that if you're after the CVT gearbox.
It's not that we don't like the Mirage and the way it tries to be eco, but we made a quick check for some rivals. SEAT UK sells the most expensive Mii 5-door for £10,430. You can also have a brand new Ibiza SC with a diesel engine for £12,915.
