Everybody knows that Mitsubishi is designing and building cars on a shoestring. However, while company bosses hinted they will let the Lancer die slowly, the exact opposite is happening in China. Probably the biggest sedan market in the world is going to receive another facelift model, one which looks radically different.
The Lancer facelift is so unique compared to the older model that we're sure it will be called "all-new." While Europe and North America are going to see only minor updates for 2016, the Lancer being prepared for China has all the design features of the Outlander and Pajero Sport.

The X-shaped element that connects the grille, fog lights and headlights is something the Lancer never had. Sharper lines down the hood and bumper make it look like a bigger, more prestigious car.

However, a look down the side reveals we are still dealing with the old platform that dates back to 2007. Mitsubishi's local joint venture partner also designed sharper taillights, a new diffuser and creases down the side. The wheels, meanwhile, look like they came from the Civic.

The interior isn't radically different. However, they have made the trim on the dash and steering wheel look much better, as shown in these photos from Chinese website Auto Home.

According to the old rumors within the industry, the next Lancer was supposed to be based on Nissan's C-segment sedan. A deal was signed and announced in late 2014. However, around the middle of last year, Mitsubishi said there were setbacks in their collaboration and an in-house Lancer update was also being developed in parallel.

It looks like this Chinese car is their Plan B. However, since production takes place in China, it's unlikely to be sold anywhere else. Following a massive scandal that rocked Mitsubishi to the core, Nissan announced it was buying a controlling stake.
