The German Mitsubishi division recently announced that it will provide 2 new generation electric vehicles i-MiEV to Fraport AG, the owner of the Frankfurt Airport which is the third largest airport in Europe and the biggest in Germany. According to official figures, the airport works with around 3,000 vehicles and it plans to refresh its range and make it a bit greener and environmentally-friendly.
Fraport AG said in a release that it aims to increase the share of EV vehicles in its fleet to 20% by 2015 and by more than 60% from 2020 onwards.
"i-MiEV’s evaluation at Frankfurt Airport marks a further milestone in Fraport’s sustainability strategy. With respect to the reduction of CO2 emissions, electric mobility at Frankfurt airport — along with the better energy efficiency of the terminals and other buildings — is an essential starting point. Pure EVs with a range of up to 160km are ideal for use for short range airport traffic," Dr. Stefan Schulte, Deputy Chairman of Fraport AG, said.
As for i MiEV, the car will be also sold in the United States after it was revealed at the 2009 New York International Auto Show. Powered by a 330-volt lithium-ion battery, it will be also launched in Europe in 2010.
"Electric vehicles are one branch of the automotive landscape and we are dedicated to providing these technology-sourced solutions as an important path for the world's clean-air options," Mitsubishi Motors North America President and CEO Shinichi Kurihara stated. "We believe the i MiEV delivers on the promise of sustainability, suitable range, performance, and innovative packaging and styling."
