Mitsubishi Motors has just revealed several photos and details regarding its all-new concept car, the GT-PHEV. It will be at the center of its display during the upcoming Paris Motor Show and could preview the design of the next Outlander.
The "GT-PHEV" name is short for Grand Tourer Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. While the GT badge is usually associated with cross-continental sportscars from Aston Martin, Jaguar or Ferrari, Mitsubishi is hinting at a more upmarket SUV.
The propulsion comes in the form of a triple-motor setup of unspecified total output. However, we can tell you that the battery has enough juice to travel 120 kilometers or 75 miles.
When you consider the Opel Ampera-e is also coming to Geneva with three times the range, the GT-PHEV seems less impressive. However, it's said to be able to travel for up to 1,200 kilometers (745 miles), which is uncommon for an SUV.
Since Mitsubishi's main business revolves around small-to-medium off-roaders, the GT is also fitted with something called "Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) integrated vehicle dynamics control system." That probably means AWD is selectively available to conserve fuel.
As far as the design is concerned, this concept takes Mitsubishi design to the next level. However, we don't expect to see anything close to this entering production. The front end is dominated by an enormous X-shaped 3D grille that connects to very narrow headlights. LED projectors that are pushed right to the sides of the fascia accentuate its rugged character.
While Japanese legislators are paving the way towards the elimination of rearview mirrors, the Mitsubishi concept already has cameras installed in their place. It's also said to feature an unconventional interior with "a horizontal dashboard that creates a spacious ambiance." Designers have opted for a high center console, Burgundy leather, and modern connectivity features.
