Mitsubishi Debuts Production Ready i-MiEV

Mitsubishi has just rolled out the production ready version of i-MiEV, the company's little electric vehicle expected to hit Japanese showrooms in late July. The car will be priced at $45,369 in the domestic market, with reports claiming Mitsubishi intends to launch in Europe in 2010.

However, the official launch date is by far a complex topic to talk about. First of all, Mitsubishi will launch the car in July, but only for Japanese corporate and government consumers, according to edmunds.com. After that, the manufacturer plans to offer it to individual buyers in April 2010, the same year when the electric vehicle is projected to go on sale in Europe.

Still, it's yet unclear whether i-MiEV will arrive in the United States after all, with Mitsubishi initially planning to launch the car in this side of the market.

"Electric vehicles are one branch of the automotive landscape and we are dedicated to providing these technology-sourced solutions as an important path for the world's clean-air options," Mitsubishi Motors North America President and CEO Shinichi Kurihara said back in April. "We believe the i MiEV delivers on the promise of sustainability, suitable range, performance, and innovative packaging and styling."

Meanwhile, it might seem like Mitsubishi changed its mind and doesn't plan to bring the i MiEV in the US for the time being.

"It will roll out in 2009 in Japan and 2010 in Europe. In the U.S., we're working to be competitive against Nissan and others," Mitsubishi's U.S. spokesman Moe Durand was quoted as saying by Autonews, while hinting that Mitsubishi currently concern is to tackle the economic recession in the US rather than launching the i MiEV.
