Not too long ago we were telling you that MINI might actually be looking to create a production version of the Superleggera Concept that would take the brand into a new chapter. Considering how good the concept looked, it was hard to curb our enthusiasm.
However, we were rather reluctant to believe that this thing could actually happen. After all, the BMW Group is always complaining about the production costs, the amount of money that goes into research and development and the slow moving sales. Recent patent drawings seem to confirm the rumors though. Hold on to your seats!
According to the source where these photos were initially found, the drawings you’re looking at show where the MINI design is heading and we have to admit we like it.
By some accounts, it does remind us of the most successful Mazda MX-5 Miata and that’s not a bad thing at all. With the right price and the right engines under the bonnet, we might have a really success story on our hands here, one that would revive the Roadster that MINI just put out of production.
The Union Jack taillights have been kept on and the so was the fin at the back. While we do like the former, the latter design cue might be a bit too much.
The concept shows as an electric car but chances are we’re going to see internal combustion engines on the production version. Admittedly, they will be small in size, the 1.5-liter 3-cylinder mill seeming like the most powerful choice but they could also get help from adjacent electric motors. A hybrid model wouldn’t be the worst idea and would offer the car plenty of torque to permit you to have fun in it.
The only question that remains to be answered now is whether this will be a limited run model or if it will become a long-term addition to the line-up?
