They really don’t make them as they used to anymore. Today’s recalls are downright embarrassing and aiming at some really stupid problems sometime. The last manufacturer to add its name on this virtual ‘list of shame’ is MINI.
The British manufacturer that has been working under BMW’s umbrella for nearly 15 years now, is recalling no less than 5,805 cars for... wait for it... a faulty spare wheel nut. Yes, you heard it right, the bolt that is supposed to hold the wheel in place is faulty and might cause some damage to put it mildly.

On the new cars, the spare tire is mounted under the car and held in place with a self locking nut. Well, apparently, someone messed up in Oxford and the nuts may not be self locking after all (the famous meme with ‘You had one job’ comes to mind right about now).

You can now imagine the consequences of that nut falling off, can’t you? Seen Final Destination? Sending or getting hit by a flying spare towards someone on the highway, even at slow speeds, doesn’t seem all that enticing if you ask us.

According to the BMW Group’s North American branch, the vehicle population covered in this voluntary recall will be taken care of in no time at all, with dealers instructed to replace the nut free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin this month and will include MINI Cooper models built between January 7 and July 21st, this year. If you’re worried about driving your car, you can either call MINI at 1-866-275-6464 or contact the NHTSA directly.
