The Oxford automaker has already announced two new engines for the next generation hatchback, a 1.5-liter and a 2.0-liter, both TwinPower Turbo units belonging to a new modular family.

But the first time we ever heard about this new 3-cylinder turbo engine was in the BMW Active Tourer Concept, a preview vehicle for the 1 Series GT. That concept had a hybrid drivetrain with electricity powering the rear wheels.

Is MINI ever going to get a hybrid? It seems the answer is "yes". During a recent interview BMW's board member in charge of MINI revealed that there will be electrified cars in the range, including a plug-in hybrid. They are still looking at whether or not to have a pure EV.

MINI has has three different power outputs for four-cylinder diesel engines in Europe, but has never brought such a car to the US. The company is now pondering a move into the diesel US market.
