The demand for hot small crossovers or coupes is high, and we’d forgive MINI for trying to make a JCW GP version out of something else other than the hatchback. But the British brand’s GP development chief Jorg Weidinger confirmed at the Los Angeles Auto Show that there will not be any other form.
“GP has history: it was a hatch, it is a hatch and it should stay a hatch” Widinger explains.
We know from our spyshots section that MINI has in the past stuck its GP II kit to the coupe as well, but decided against building it.
According to Widinger, the company has no intention of going after any sort of Nurburgring lap record with the JCW GP limited edition. The lap time of 8 minutes and 23 seconds was only set for development purposes, and they are happy with the fact that it’s 19 seconds faster than the old car.
