MINI US Sales Keep on Diving, Recording Another Regress in May

It seems like the MINI brand just can’t seem to recover after introducing the new Hatchback model in the US. While at first we thought a drop in sales would be understandable in the initial months, until the new model starts gaining some ground, by now, things seem to be rather serious, showing us that there’s an underlying problem at hand here.
In May, MINI USA sold just 5,729 automobiles, a decrease of 3.6 percent compared to the same month of 2013, when 5,944 units were delivered to their owners. On a year-to-date basis, MINI managed to sell a grand total of 18,776 units so far, a decrease of 27.2 percent compared to the 25,785 vehicles delivered over the same period of last year.

However, a surprising trend surfaced in pre-owned vehicles, where there’s been a 16.2 percent increase recorded, a total of 2,282 automobiles being sold through various CPO programs in May. In the same month of 2013, only 1,964 units were sold.

On a year-to-date basis, the second-hand market seems to be gaining traction, especially for MINI vehicles. Sales of such models have gone up by 23.3 percent in the last 5 months, to a grand total of 10,415 automobiles from the 8,447 sold over the same period of 2013.

Compared to the numbers recorded in April, when there was a 14.9 percent drop, things seem to be recovering now, mostly because the new MINI is now available across the entire nation. However, sales really have to pick-up in June to make up for the slow start of the year.
