After working together five years ago, MINI is once again partnering up with Danish furniture maker “Republic of Fritz Hansen” to create a new collection. Their second collaboration is to be presented during the blickfang design exhibition in Copenhagen, that will take place this weekend.
Yes, MINI is making chairs.

Five years ago their first joint venture was named, the “MINI Airstream by Fritz Hansen” and it’s a trailer concept. This time, the collaboration between the two companies takes the form of a modern homage to the Classic Drop chair, sporting an iconic MINI look. According to the company, this lounge seat was designed for the renowned SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen back in 1958, which was also one year before the classic Mini would go into production.

Along with our rigorous design standards, the textiles used in the MINI have to meet a whole range of requirements. The materials must be timeless, comfortable and functional. Transferring this expertise to furniture classic was an exciting challenge,” head of MINI Design Colour and Trim Annette Baumeister explained.

Two models, classic and modern

The Classic Drop Chair and the Modern Drop Chair designed by MINI stand as a fusion of classic form language with forward-looking design elements. The seat cushions with their stitched inserts lend both chairs the aura of an automative interior, while contrast stitching and colored piping cite the brand’s design language.

The first is made from premium full nappa leather and features a piped insert that harks back to the seats of the classic MINI, while the its pepper white legs echo one of the most popular bodywork colors of the actual car model. The second, comes with a fabric/nubuk leather combination, the key highlights are blue leather and a sophisticated stitched diamond pattern.
