We’ve seen the MINI suspended at a museum but what the official press release states is a bit... out of this world: “MINI marks a decade of fun and stylish motoring with a launch into space and the chance to win a trip of a life time.”
We’ve read through the release and the www.mini.co.uk/lunatics carefully, and we don’t think they’re actually launching a car into space, but who knows what the have in mind.
The idea behind the marketing campaign has everything to do with the mile clocked by the MINIs that have been sold to date.
“Over a third of a million British owners have bought one, they've clocked up an estimated 15 billion miles on UK roads and have driven enough miles to go around the world 600,000 times or take 33,000 return journeys to the moon and back,” MINI says.
The first MINI built under BMW’s ‘protection’ rolled off the assembly line in the summer of 2001 from the company’s line in Oxford, and 10 years later MINI is celebrating a decade of motoring by taking its owners on a virtual trip into space.
Owners are invited to post details of their car into a virtual space world called 'MINI Lunatics', after which their car will be parked in the virtual MINI space station. If you land on a lucky spot, you get a special prize. These include a trip for four to Cape Canaveral. Drivers with 252,000 miles or more can register their MINI's details to be in with a chance of winning special limited edition MINI memorabilia.
