MINI John Cooper Works Does Offical Tunnel Test

They say that the MINI is not mini anymore. But they all need to grow up, because that's just what the John Cooper Works has done. From a plucky little toy, it's become a competent hot hatch with the power of a Golf GTI but much better sound, at least in this new official video.

I listen to the exhaust sound of hot hatchbacks all day. So this official video from MINI is right up my alley. But in case you've got kids and a dog, there's also a clip dedicated to the JCW Countryman below. Both now use a 2-liter turbo engine that's good for 231 horsepower, exactly one more than the Golf GTI and Skoda Octavia RS.

It's a big number that's backed up by a top speed that would terrify any old Mini owner: 246 km/h in the Hardtop or 234 km/h in the chunkier crossover. I think the sound is also better than a GTI, which is not surprising because the Cooper S was pretty good already, popping on command.

It's amazing to think that this John Cooper Works generation has been with us since 2015 and in that time we've gotten three more flavors for a total of four: Convertible, Countryman, and Clubman.

Oh, Mister Cooper, what big grilles you have!

What you notice is how classy the JCW is for a car with chilies up its bottom. The seats is like those of a sports car and would make a Focus ST owner feel ashamed. Likewise, the exterior is covered with black accents, and some rather large wheels have been installed.

If we're not mistaken, there's a JCW Pro exhaust available through the parts catalog that can be added for some carbon trim and an extra ten horsepower. However, the standard setup brings enough of a sense of occasion.
