In case the MINI JCW GP needed a comparison with a proper competitor, the Audi A1 Quattro is the car to compare it to. Both of these hot hatches are packed with power, light, small and built in limited numbers.
The guys from CAR Magazine too these 'lunatics' out for a quick drive to see if they could pick a winner in this limited-edition hot hatch segment even though the A1 Quattro was really hard to find in the UK.
That's because Audi decided to limit the production number of this special model to just 333 units, out of which only 19 were allocated to the UK. Furthermore, all of them are left-hand-drive.
MINI, on the other hand, decided to built 2,000 of the JCW GP model, selling them at an also exclusive price. Even so, the GP is GBP12,000 cheaper than its German rival and that's quite a difference.
Under the bonnet, the differences aren't that big. The Oxford-built model comes with the traditional 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that develops 218 HP and 260 Nm (191 lb-ft) whilst the A1 borrowed the engine from the TTS model, and has 256 HP and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque coming out of a supercharged 2-liter unit.
Of course, the Inglostadt-built hatch has all-wheel-drive to its advantage but on the road, that makes for little difference. Actually, the MINI proved to be more fun and engaging that the overweight Audi that tops the scale by 230 kilos over the JCW model.
Overall, both of them are completely mental and have plenty of punch to keep you entertained all the time. However, GBP12,000 is quite a lot and you might have a hard time trying to grab an A1 Quattro as they might've been already sold out while the JCW GP might still be available in some parts of the world.
