Starting in 1978, MINI owners and fans from across the world have come together at venues across Europe to celebrate their love for the car that in time has become a cultural phenomenon. This year, the center of the MINI world was Bristol in the UK.
Choosing this location for the 2019 gathering was not accidental. This year the nameplate celebrates its 60th birthday, so it was only natural for the celebration to be held in the home country.
The event is officially called the International Mini Meeting and is the world’s largest gatherings of MINI owners and fans, all flocking to one location to admire cars, exchange thoughts and engage in activities that are not unlike a music festival.
At the end of last week, the carmaker itself assembled a fleet of 60 MINI cars from each of the years the nameplate has been in production, led by the original 1959 MINI and the 2019 MINI 60 Years Edition. The pack set off from the Oxford facility and arrived in Bristol just in time to take part in what the organizers described as “a huge Birthday Party,” on August 11.
On Monday, one day after the event, the British carmaker released a series of photographs showing fragments of the weekend-long event, and making all who missed it feel sorry about it.
The MINI nameplate was born in 1959 from the mind of Alec Issigonis and from the assembly line of what was then the British Motor Corporation. Rapidly, MINI grew to become one of the easiest car names to very quickly associate with a certain lifestyle and urban driving.
To properly mark the anniversary, MINI introduced at the beginning of the year the British Racing Green 60 Years Edition for the 3-and 5-door variants of the car. One such vehicle became last week the ten-millionth car to roll off assembly lines in Oxford.
