MINI E New Cabin Heater Developed by BorgWarner

BorgWarner has worked with BMW to develop a new generation of electric cabin heater BERU system, which is destined for the MINI E.

Rental MINI Es in the U.S., UK, Germany and other vehicles have been equipped with the application as part of a test program. The system has gone through a nine-month pre-testing program during its R&D phase.

The new cabin heater is connected to the car’s 400 volt electrical system and is installed in the vehicle’s air conditioning system. It manages to reach an output of 3,000 watts in order to warm the cabin and defrost windshields. The device uses ceramic components and can be adapted for a wide range of all-electric and hybrid vehicles.

As electric vehicles generate very little waste heat (unlike internal combustion-powered ones) and their battery packs do not produce enough heat either, they need an additional source to provide heat for defrosting the windshields and heating the interior. And this is were the special heaters like the aforementioned one come into play. The product has been developed to provide a safe (in terms of visibility) and comfortable (in terms of ambient temperature) ride.

"Currently being piloted in the MINI E, BorgWarner BERU Systems' new high-voltage cabin heater provides drivers and passengers of electric vehicles with a clear view and comfortable ride," BorgWarner said, describing its latest product.

BorgWarner BERU Systems is a global supplier and manufacturer of diesel cold start technology and ignition technology for gasoline vehicles.
