MINI Countryman Official Details and Photos Released

The wait for the fourth model of the MINI range is now over, as after two days of teasing and taunting German carmaker BMW decided to reveal, in all its might, the MINI Countryman or, if you like, our good-old MINI with a SAV attitude. The Countryman will hold under its hood a choice of three petrol and two diesel engines, with power outputs ranging from 90 hp (MINI One D Countryman) to 184 hp (MINI Cooper S Countryman).

The later troop is sourced from the 1.6l four-cylinder petrol engine which, for the first time, comes with a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct fuel injection, as well as fully variable valve management.

The engines are helped to meet EU5 and ULEV II emission standards by the use of the MINIMALISM fuel efficiency concept, comprising Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Start Stop, a gearshift point indicator, and on-demand management of the engine’s ancillary units. The use of a six-speed manual gearbox also adds to the eco performances of the car (the petrol engine models are also available with six-speed automatic complete with Steptronic).

All Countrymen are fitted with permanent MINI ALL4 all-wheel drive, an electrohydraulic differential positioned directly on the final drive varying the distribution from front to rear in "an infinite process".

The system directs 50 percent of the engine’s power to the rear wheels under normal conditions, while when put through its paces, it directs all of it. The system is aided by Electric Power Steering with Servotronic, Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control as well as an electronic limited-slip function.

Built as a means to tap into other segments of the market, the new MINI is mini no more. It's taller, longer and provides more interior space. The Countryman, the first MINi with four doors, will come s standard with four seats, while a three-seat bench will also be available.

As with any MINI, the range of customization options will be overwhelming, especially because of the addition of model-specific features exclusive to the MINI Countryman. The new options include interior colors, trim strips and upholstery, high-end audio and navigation systems, extra-large Panorama roof, Adaptive Headlights, light-alloy wheels ranging in size from 16 to 19 inches and many, many more.

The car will be presented at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show, probably under the Countryman name, despite the fact that BMW warned the name may vary depending on the region.
