MINI Cooper S Roadster Test Drive by Autoguide

Even though looking at the calendar might make you think summer is over, the sunny days will keep on brightening our lives, at least for a couple of weeks. That’s why driving a MINI Cooper S Roadster will continue to be appealing in the following days.

The guys from autoguide took one for a test drive and shared their thoughts. The 1.6-liter engine powered car has 181 HP at its disposal and 177 lb-ft of torque. In this case, the 4-cylinder unit was hooked up to a 6-speed manual transmission.

Even though the engine is turbocharged, you hardly feel any kind of lag and, you’ll even get a bonus 15 lb-ft of torque when you need it, a feature called overboost. The gears are exact and the gearbox is swift, making this model a real driver’s car.

Being a Cooper S model, the suspension settings are, of course, a bit rougher. Some might find it annoying but that’s exactly what you bought, when you went to the dealership and chose the car with the red ‘S’ on the boot.

Talking about the boot, there are some compromises in this department, of course. The cargo area in the back measures 8.5 cu-ft of storage (240 liters) not much, but plenty for the maximum of 2 people that can ride inside the car.

As it is a convertible, the roof will have to come down at one point or another, an operation easy to do. The thing about the Roadster is that you have to manually unlatch the roof from the windshield, after that, the electric motor taking over.

On the road, with the roof down, wind noise is reasonable and turbulence is kept in check so you’ll find the MINI quite enjoyable. On the inside, you’ll find the same MINI design, with the legendary central speedometer that is a love it or hate it feature.
