We’ve always questioned the real world usability of speed limiters in cars, but, as of today, we won’t do that anymore. Our view has been changed by the power of example, albeit a negative example.
It’s all explained in the video below, which shows what can happen when speed-limiting devices are replaced by a passenger who tries to prevent the driver from going fast.

The action takes place in Turkey

The footage shows us two men in a Mini, probably a Cooper S, with the driver obviously dipping into the power reserve of the hatch on public roads. The action happens in Turkey, with the guy behind the wheel clearly being determined to make that exhaust sing.

You can notice the passenger is somewhat frightened by the experience, as the roofliner handle becomes his best friend.

As the driver keeps accelerating through the gears, the passenger aims to prevent him from swapping those cogs. Neither of them is prepared to give up, which lead to a type of arm wrestling we had never seen before.

The two try to have fun in the process, so what started out as an attempt to keep the velocity from increasing any further, easily turns into some sort of a game for the two.

As they enter a tunnel, the driver tries to get a hold of the gear lever, with the amount of force involved into the action increasing.

As the driver takes his eyes off the road, the inevitable happens, with the car crashing. The camera recording the action flies around the car as the accident unfolds, so we don’t get to see the aftermath of the ridiculous game the two were playing. While the two were grown men, we hope the teenagers watching this have would learn their lesson and never try something like this on their own.
