Combining all the latest modern technology BMW engineers could muster with the sexy outer shape of a retro-chic subcompact, the new MINI is one step closer to making its debut in America. A couple of weeks after being shown in Detroit, the new Cooper and its more powerful big brother have been priced in the US.
The base Cooper mode starts just short of twenty grand, $19,950 before you take destination into account. This new hatch is a significant step towards the future, being equipped with a new 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine producing 136 hp. That's less than you get from a Kia Rio or Hyundai Veloster. But the turbo engine in the MINI has a lot more torque.

Is $20,000 too much for a small car? Well it kind of is, since there are a number of very nice alternatives. For example, a Hyundai Veloster costs $180,000, while the Ford Fiesta ST with almost 200 hp is $21,000.

Speaking of performance, if you want more you're going to go for the $23,600 for the Cooper S. This packs a brand new 2-liter turbo engine with 192 hp, replacing the older 1.6-liter turbo.

This is just loose information about what the MINI costs, since nobody ever buys a stock car. The official configurator is now online and we added $1,500 for the automatic gearbox with paddle shifters and $750 for new wheels to our car.

“The product team worked diligently to sustain a minimal price increase over the previous model while adding a number of new technologies and features”, said Patrick McKenna, Head of MINI Product Planning and Events, MINI USA. “People will be amazed at the interior quality of this car combined with legendary MINI go kart handling and all-new BMW Group engines. The new MINI is a lot like nothing else.”
