In a rather interesting twist, the new MINI 5-door hardtop actually got a decent pricing in Australia, unlike what we’ve been getting used from its parent company, BMW. The new body style’s pricing will start at AUD27,750 ($24,834) plus on-road costs.
That puts it just above its 3-door brother that costs just AUD1,100 less but is available right now, whereas the longer more practical version will hit the Australian shores in November.

For this kind of money you get the Cooper model fitted with the new 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine making 136 HP and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque thanks to turbocharging. Stock features include Stop/start engine, Keyless engine start toggle, 15-inch alloy wheels, auto headlights and wipers and leather steering wheel amongst others.

The Cooper D model will start at AUD32,900 ($29,500) coming with a similar new-age 1.5-liter diesel engine making 116 HP and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque. This one will have 16” wheels as standard as well as dual-zone climate control, a 6.5” LED center display and extended Bluetooth support.

The top of the range Cooper S model, with its 2-liter 4-cylinder 192 HP engine will start at AUD38,050 ($34,100) and have plenty of kit to start with, including 17 inch alloys, front sports seats, cloth/leather upholstery, satellite navigation and dual chrome tailpipes.

Sales of the 5-door model are expected to be bigger than for the 3-door model in Australia, that is known to prefer 5-door versions.

“The Australian market is very heavily weighted towards five-door hatches, and that is the sweet spot of the market,” said BMW Group Australia general manager of corporate communications, Lenore Fletcher. “We believe the take up rate will be good, though we understand some buyers will leave the three-door. There is a wider appeal of this vehicle to a much larger audience. The three-door has very specific buyers, and a specific style and image. The 5 Door is obviously a whole new ball game,” she added.
