For four days at the end of this month, the streets and roads around America’s capital, Washington D.C., will get swarmed by cars and drivers taking part in a Mille Miglia event. That’s right, a Mille Miglia race, as the event is coming to the U.S., going outside the boundaries of Italy for the first time since 1927.
The event is scheduled to take place between October 23 to October 26, and will comprise one day of regularity rally training and a three-day race that will cover 500 miles in and around the city. The finish line of the race has been set at the Italian Ambassador’s residence in Washington D.C., Villa Firenze, to mark a symbolic return to Italian soil.

For the Americans, the race will follow the same rules as in the home country. Participants will be divided into two categories, namely veteran (crews with at least one driver with experience in two or more 1000 Miglia between 2013 and 2019), and novice (those with less or no experience).

There will be 22 cars spilt in 2 classes, namely 1000 Miglia Era Class and the Post-1000 Miglia Era Class. The former is dedicated to cars manufactured between 1927 and 1957, while the latter is meant for cars produced after 1958.

The decision to have a run of the Mille Miglia in the U.S. has been made as a result of the high number of classic and super car owners in the country, says the organization’s CEO, Alberto Piantoni.

“1000 Miglia S.r.l. is making important and strategic organizational changes that are intended to broaden our brand awareness and excite a new generation of enthusiasts,” the executive said in a statement.

“The logical next step towards reaching this goal is 1000 Miglia Warm USA.”

The original Mille Miglia was born in 1927 and ran for 30 years, not including the war years. In was reborn in 1977 and has been running ever since.
