Rumors regarding Maserati’s plan to create a mid-engined 911-rival, have recently surfaced. The aim is the creation of a ‘pure’ two-seater sports car to claw back some of the market share from the likes of the Audi R8 and the ever-present Porsche 911.
The news comes from an Italian publication, which claims that the information comes all the way from the top - Harald J. Wester, the CEO of Maserati. According to him, the car will be called the GranSport and is expected to sell for under €150,000/$198,000. The car is expected to get its power from a Ferrari-borrowed 4.7L V8 which will probably be coupled to one of Ferrari’s double-clutch transmissions.

Excluding the MC12 which is heavily based on the Ferrari Enzo and the Birdcage which was a one-off concept, Maserati has not made a mid-engined road car for over 33 years - the predecessor of this new mid-engined car will be the old Merak of the 1970s. We look forward to seeing what they come up with.
