As far as collectible cars are concerned, Alfa Romeo enthusiasts would like to own the Tipo 33 Stradale above pretty much every other model in the Italian automaker’s century-long history. Only 18 units were produced from 1967 to 1969 and all are bite-the-back-of-your-hand beautiful thanks to Franco Scaglione.
After cutting his teeth in the early 1950s with Fiat, Abarth, Lancia, and Siata, the Italian designer made a name for himself with the Alfa Romeo BAT 5 concept car and two subsequent design studies. Also responsible for the Giulietta Sprint, the one and only Scaglione pretty much stopped designing automobiles after the bankruptcy of Intermeccanica, a.k.a. Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica.

His legacy, however, lives and inspires to this day as you can tell from the car photo gallery. Baptized Alfa Romeo Nivola, the pixel work comes courtesy of Netherlands-based Ugur Sahin Design. And obviously enough, that’s a 4C with a redesigned body shell and a few other styling cues from the Tipo 33 Stradale.

Named in honor of Italian racing driver (and rider) Tazio Nuvolari, the Nivola is meant to be “a production-ready concept” thanks to the underpinnings of the 4C. So to speak, Ugur Sahin Design approached this project as a coachbuilder would.

However, trying to gift the mid-engine sports car with Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale goodies “created a huge challenge as the proportions and hard points are quite different.” In order to get as close as possible to the proportions of the original from the 1960s, the car’s rear was extended to accommodate the sleek rear quarter panels.

The rear window clearly states Alfa Romeo 4C, leaving little to the imagination of people that were expecting the twin-turbo V6 from the Giulia Quadrifoglio or a small-displacement V8 like the 2.0-liter engine of the Tipo 33 Stradale. As a brief refresher, the 1750 TBi turbo four-cylinder that debuted in the Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde quite a long time ago develops 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

That’s 240 PS and 350 Nm for all of you metric system enthusiasts, enough for the 4C to accelerate to 60 miles per hour (97 kph) in 4.1 seconds. At the present moment, the 4C is exclusively available as a soft-top convertible with a removable roof.

Alfa Romeo doesn’t plan to replace the 4C directly in the nearest of futures. The return of the GTV and 8C have also been canceled in favor of two crossovers.
