Michigan Gives Ford $55 Million Incentive for Hybrid Development

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) approved $55 million incentives in refundable tax credits for American automaker Ford to continue its efforts in the electrical vehicle development sector. Governor Jennifer Granholm today said the incentive will be sourced from the new Michigan Advanced Battery Credits initiative, Ford stated in a statement for the press.

“Ford appreciates Michigan’s proactive positioning in support of these advanced technologies, which we believe are at the heart of a new generation of vehicles,” said Curt Magleby, director, Government Affairs. “Incentives to help concentrate research and engineering related to electric vehicles in Michigan will help position the state to become a leader in this emerging technology.”

In essence, the funds will be used by Ford to designed next-generation hybrids, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles. In addition, the company promises to improve Michigan facilities and continue its research and development plans in the region, while preserving jobs and avoid applying cost-cutting measures.

“These promising technologies give us the opportunity to transform our transportation and energy future,” said in a statement for the press Nancy Gioia, director, Sustainable Mobility Technologies and Hybrid Vehicle Programs. “Government support is essential to achieving the potential for electrified vehicles in the future. Michigan’s groundbreaking program accelerates our ability to expand and focus our engineering and research efforts here.”

Ford already announced plans to get more involved into the electric vehicles sector, with several fuel-efficient and environmentally-friendly models expected by 2012. For instance, Ford says it will deliver a full battery commercial Transit Connect van-type commercial vehicle in 2010 plus a full battery electric passenger car in 2011. The American automaker also aims to deliver next-generation hybrid vehicles, including a plug-in version, by 2012.
