Michigan Bans Texting While Driving, Live on Oprah

As Oprah's No Phone Zone Day rally is getting ready to kick off in Washington DC, Detroit, Los Angeles, Boston, and Atlanta, the state of Michigan is gearing up to ban texting while driving.

Jennifer Granholm, the Governor of the state, is expected to sign a three-bill package at the Detroit rally, making Michigan the 23rd state to ban such practices. The signing of the law will be broadcasted live from the GM Renaissance Center on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

"Winfrey did a show on it (texting issue) on Jan. 18, and since that time has talked about it on 47 subsequent shows," Holcombe said according to DetNews. "We have been following this issue very closely around the country and sharing news from around the country as it happens."

In Michigan, the law, which takes effect on July 1, will state that the ones who brake the it will get a $100 fine for the first offense and $200 each time after that. The law considers texting a primary offense, meaning drivers can be pulled over for that.

The event scheduled for today will be broadcasted live on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and will feature renowned speakers, including Gayle King, editor-at-large for O, The Oprah Magazine, transportation secretary Ray LaHood, ABC 7's Leon Harris; and Jennifer Smith, founding director of FocusDriven.

"My biggest hope is that it becomes mandatory that you not have you're phone in the car and use it while driving. Just as seat belts are mandatory, just as driving while drunk is considered absolutely taboo," Winfrey said according to
