The Obamas left the White House in 2017, when the Trump administration started, but they still live in “a bubble,” as former FLOTUS Michelle Obama says in a new interview.
That includes not being allowed to drive herself anywhere for security reasons. Truth be told, Mrs. Obama misses being able to jump at the wheel and take herself out for a ride, but she understands the need for extra security.

Mrs. Obama is now promoting her first autobiographical book, “Becoming,” with a series of wide-ranging interviews that tackle anything from her time by the President’s side to her thoughts on the current administration and life after the White House. The latest, with People Magazine, falls along the same lines, while also bringing this curious insight, about her driving ban.

The interview is out with this week’s edition of the magazine. Asked whether she’s allowed to drive her own car, the former FLOTUS shakes her head with disappointment. “No driving for me. We still live in a bubble,” she says.

“If we had a farm somewhere, maybe I could drive around it,”
Mrs. Obama adds. “As we’ve seen, the risks are still there.”

She’s referring to the bomb package sent to Obama last month in the mail, which led to increased security. If there ever was a slim chance for Secret Service to allow her to drive herself, it’s gone now.

Legally, the current President and all former Presidents are not allowed to drive on government roads for security reasons. That means that they remain dependent on Secret Service for the rest of their life.

Obama might be ok with that, but Donald Trump will probably have a hard time with it. He loves cars and already has an impressive collection of them, but his status as former POTUS will mean he will never again be able to drive one. Imagine the frustration.
