Michelin Confirm F1 Interest, But No Decision

Following recent reports that they are considering an F1 return in 2011, French tire manufacturer Michelin has finally hinted, through the voice of an official, that the reports are not at all false. It seems the former F1 supplier is indeed evaluating their potential comeback in the series, but only under a series of conditions.

We have made no decision. But we are closely monitoring the evolution of the regulations, knowing that we are committed to promoting the technical quality of our products and also the notion of respect for the environment,” a representative of the Clermont Ferrand-based company told French daily Le Figaro, according to the GMM news agency.

First of all, they would very much fancy a head-to-head battle with another tire manufacturer, as becoming sole suppliers in Formula One was never part of their plan. This was in fact the reason why they chose to leave the championship at the end of 2006, leaving Bridgestone all alone in their bid to become official partners of F1.

Secondly, their proposed formula of tires for the upcoming season of F1 would be based on an 18-inch wheel hub diameter, rather than the current 13-inch one. That would lead to some major aerodynamic work from all the teams, as having that kind of tires fitted on an F1 single-seater would heavily influence the way they behave on a race track.

Additionally, the French company will also evaluate the rules regarding environmental protection, as well as the costs of supplying their tires to the interested teams. The latest reports on the matter suggest an approximate sum of EUR5 million that each team would have to pay in order to benefit from Michelin compound through the entire season.

Bridgestone is also evaluating the possibility of continuing as tire suppliers in the championship from 2011 onwards, while Korean tire companies Hankook or Kumho have also showed interest in joining a potential multi-tire-supplier formula starting next season.
