Being the most decorated Olympian of all time with a total of 22 medals is not really the easiest thing in the world, which is probably why American Swimmer Michael Fred Phelps party a bit to long the other night. Problem is he also decided to drive home afterwards and ended up arrested for DUI, crossing double land lines and excessive speeding.
Michael Phelps was traveling through the For McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore, Maryland when he got pulled over by the Maryland Transportation Authority Police. Police claims the 29-year old swimmer was speeding at 84 mph (135 km/h) in a 45mph (72km/h) zone. He was arrested for DUI, a charge that was pretty bad for the sporstman’s image.
In fact, Phelps later on said he was sorry in a statement he put on social media, which reads: “Earlier this morning, I was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines. I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility. I know these words may not mean much right now but I’m deeply sorry to everyone I have let down.”
Not only does this count for the second time he was arrested for DUI, but Phelps happened to by in problem with the law before. In February 2009, publication of a photograph of Phelps using a water pipe, resulted in the loss of Kellogg as a sponsor, as well as a three-month suspension from USA Swimming.
Back then, the swimmer admitted that the photo, taken at a student party at the University of South Carolina, was authentic. He then publicly apologized and said his behavior was “inappropriate.”
