Michael Dunlop brought a historic TT victory for BMW Motorrad as he won his 8th race in the Isle of Man, in the Superbike class. The last time a BMW motorcycle won on the Mountain Course was back in 1939, when Georg Meier clawed victory aboard a Type 255 Kompressor bike.
The elder of Robert Dunlop’s boys, Michael stole the victory from Guy Martin (Tyco Suzuki), and had a 20.5 seconds lead. The third-fastest rider in the Superbike Race was Conor Cummins aboard a Honda motorcycle. Dunlop rode a BMW S1000RR entered in the 2014 IOM TT by BMW Motorrad and Hawk Racing, with major factory support. BMW factory technicians are on site, providing support for the team and the bike.

Michael Dunlop managed to pass the leader James Hillier (Kawasaki) even from the early stages of the race. The Kawasaki rider eventually fell to the 9th position, behind another Team Green rider, Dean Harrison. The top 5 was rounded up with Bruce Anstey and Michael Rutter, both aboard Honda machinery.

John McGuinness aboard a factory Honda bike was 7th fastest, behind Michael Dunlop’s brother William, riding a Tyco Suzuki motorcycle. Joshua Brookes and his Yamaha completed the top 10 in the 2014 Dainese Superbike TT.

On the record-breaking side, 44-years-old Bruce Anstey (New Zealand) was clocked around the Snaefell Mountain with an 132.298 mph (212.867 km/h) lap, becoming the current fastest rider in the Isle of Man. However, with the top-notch Senior TT race to be held on Friday, June 6th, it may be that Anstey’s record will not endure for too long.
It will be quite captivating to see whether Michael Dunlop will be as successful in his first year with BMW Motorrad hardware as he was back in 2013 with Honda. Last year he won the Joey Dunlop Trophy, a prize awarded to the most successful rider of the TT edition. Dunlop won 4 races, and was beaten by John McGuinness in the Senior TT event. Today, the Isle of Man sees Supersport and Superstock action.
