Let's be honest here - when thinking about building a rat rod, the Mazda Miata has to be the last starting point that comes to mind. And yet, somebody has done it. From the depths of Craigslist, we bring you the Miata rat rod, all with a German twist.
This contraption is listed as a 1990 Mazda Miata, but, upon closer inspection, you might notice the front end is not exactly in check. Instead of the usual MX-5 soft styling cues, this Mazda is not afraid to show us its mechanical side - in a way, this is a bit like an engine compartment cleavage.

Oh, and this isn't your... normal rat rod. Instead, the vehicle uses a Mercedes front grille, with the mandatory three-pointed star shining above all else, in its effort to try and impersonate a classic Mercedes-Benz.

Some extra lights here, a few welds there and the job was completed.

While we like the idea of returning to the styling of the good old days, this project looks more like the nightmare of somebody who suddenly discovered he's terrible at drawing cars and then used his twisted sketches as blueprints for the build.

Come to think of it, we're probably dealing with a guy who took a crashed Miata and pulled a few welding moves in an attempt to make some money out of the poor Mazda. The ad doesn't include enough pictures for us to tell, but we're pretty sure the car shows "please kill me" signs when the seller isn't watching.

Speaking of which, this is offered for a price of $1,400. And those who also want the available hardtop should know this is sold separately.

The painted-on rust, as well as the white wall tires (they do look legit, but we'd need higher resolution images to be sure) are on the house.

Just make sure you don't ask too many questions related to the safety of the structure.
