Miami Dirt Bike Thieves Chased by Helicopter

Miami-Dade Police Helicopter 1 photo
South Florida is facing an unprecedented wave of bike thefts, but if you think these guys are out for machines such as the Ducati 1199 Panigale or BME S1000RR, you're wrong: these are dirt bike thieves.
The use the same MO on pretty much any occasion: ram a stolen pickup truck trough the front doors, bars or large-window walls, get to the showroom, skip the expensive superbikes and steal the fast dirt bikes.

Police reports and surveillance camera footage show that the thieves have gotten away with up to nine bikes at a time, in only a matter of minutes.

As the Miami-Dade PD has rules preventing LEOs from chasing high-speed motorcycles, it's down to the eye in the sky to see where the thieves are heading for and coordinate the ground patrols. Unfortunately the force makes a slow progress as it's impossible to track 5 motorcycles running from the police in 5 separate directions.

However, the Miami Police is apprehending more of these dirt bike thieves, and learns than some of them have long wrap sheets including first degree murder and similar crimes. The fact that they're also getting away from the police using bike which can technically go anywhere makes the patrol cars' job a lot more difficult, but even so, one or two criminals at a time, we're glad to know the cops are there, watching our bikes. Follow the CBS Miami link for a video documentary on this case.
