MG Wants to Be the Next Kia

Kia (and Hyundai’s) ascent into the ‘good’ mainstream brands has been very swift and very efficient. You would be hard-pressed to find something really wrong with any of their cars (except for the badge, in some people’s minds). They have done so well, in fact, that they have now been chosen as role models by another manufacturer eager to get attention - MG.

Now under Chinese ownership, MG is aiming high, and they want to at least match the Korean manufacturers’ very quick rise in Europe. According to MG Vice Director of Design, Martin Uhlarik, "In terms of product and competitiveness I'd say we're not very far away [from Kia] already [ . . . ] In five years we'll be well on our way." They have good reason to choose Kia as their role model, as despite having already risen so much in the last few years, they also reported a 24% increase in their European sales through the first 10 months of the year, managing to sell 299,476 units.

However, MG has an advantage over Kia, in the form of its much more prestigious badge, which will undoubtedly be a selling point out of the reach of the Koreans. So, in five years’ time, once MG begins making top-notch cars (as they say they are planning to), if their cars are as good as those made by Kia or Hyundai, they will have the advantage of the badge to bring in that extra influx of buyers.
