Mercedes Would Welcome Raikkonen Back

Mercedes Benz motorsport director Norbert Haug revealed, shortly after McLaren's win in Singapore, that the Woking based team would be very comfortable having Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen as teammates from 2010 onwards. The German official therefore fueled rumors that the 2007 F1 champion might return to drive for the silver arrows starting next year.

Last week, only days before the Singapore GP, there were several rumors in the media suggesting that Raikkonen has signed an agreement (in principle) with McLaren for 2010. However, in order for that to happen, the Finn would have had to be sacked by Ferrari, as his deal with the Maranello based team runs out at the end of 2010.

With Ferrari expected to make the official announcement of Fernando Alonso's signing with the prancing horse on Thursday, Haug seems to already set the grounds for Kimi's comeback.

Whatever you can do to get the best available drivers, that is what you have to do. It's a question of money, it's a question of capability, a question of the amount of talent. Managing two megastars, I don't think that honestly it was a problem,” said Haug, who insisted that the Alonso situation a few years ago will not repeat in the near future.

With Alonso there were some noises to the outside world, but in reality inside the team everybody did his job and in reality we should have won the world championship. But it was not due to not having team orders,” added the Mercedes official.

In addition, Haug believes Kimi would be happy to return to the place where he nearly won 2 championships and where he spent 5 wonderful years in Formula One. As for his relationship with Ron Dennis, no comments on that.

We should have won at least two world championships (2003 and 2005). To have Kimi in our team winning two world championships would certainly have been a fair outcome for him. I have a good relationship with him and I'm sure he would say the same,” concluded Haug.
