“If there is a feasible solution with an investor for that team, we would be prepared to discuss it. But the financial background needs to be there. You cannot give any presents at this time and in this (financial) climate, but we would like to help for the sake of Formula One,” said Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug in an interview for autosport.com site.
“Ross Brawn and Nick Fry and their guys have done a good job so far, so if we could be in a position to help we certainly could try to do so. But the financial feasibility is very important. It needs to be 100 per cent bulletproof,” added Haug.
Haug did not reveal whether discussions took place between McLaren representatives and Ross Brawn, the team principal for Honda's F1 operations. Also, he did not disclosed whether the potential engine package will include the newly-developed Kinetic Energy Recovery System developed in-house by the Woking-based team.
If such a move takes place, Honda's F1 team would become the second independent outfit in the F1 paddock to use Mercedes power plants after Force India. The German constructor will therefore replace Ferrari as main engine supplier in the Great Circle, as the Maranello Scuderia has been engine partner with both Force India and Toro Rosso in 2008.
