Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its 2013 F1 car, called W04, ahead of the pre-season testing at Jerez, Spain. The new Silver Arrow, which is supposed to make fans forget last season’s failed attempt at the World Championship title, was revealed in the presence of Mercedes’ AMG Petronas drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
All in all, the new car looks much like its predecessor, but that’s not a big surprise considering the latest trends in Formula 1 design and regulations. The biggest change is probably represented by the new nose and alterations brought to the rear end, including a second-generation Coanda exhaust. The “rhinoplasty” sure makes the car look better, thanks to the new five-element front wing, but the design is said to improve both aerodynamics and grip.
“It’s a clear step forward in design and detail sophistication over its predecessor. 2013 marks the start of a second era for our Silver Arrows works team,” said team principal Ross Brown, who’s expecting better results from the new season: “With Lewis and Nico, we have what I believe to be the strongest driver line-up in Formula 1”.
The F1 Mercedes AMG Petronas W04 will complete 12 days of pre-season testing at the Jerez circuit in southern Spain before heading to Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix, the seasons first race.
2012 was a disappointing year for Mercedes in Formula 1, the German team ending the season in fifth place, with just one win and a total of three podium finishes. Last year’s driver line-up included the now retired Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg.
