Let's start with the more easily understood changes to the engine range. Most of the mills have stayed the same, which is not surprising when you consider constant updates have been made since 2011 when they launched the car. However, the the diesel powered B 200 CDI model now uses a 2.1-liter engine rather than a 1.8-liter. Output remains the same at 136 hp and Mercedes has also added a 4Matic version of the B 200 to the range, a cheaper and more economical alternative to the B 220 CDI. Speaking of which, the 220 models now have a little more power, 177 hp instead of the usual 170 hp, but torque remains the same.

The B 160 and 180 CDI continue to soldier on using 1.5-liter mills, while the petrol range remains unchanged. There, two outputs of a 1.6-liter (B 180 with 122 hp and B 200 with 156 hp) and two of a 2-liter turbo (B 220 with 184 hp and B 250 with 211 hp) are available. The B 250 is the powerful engine in the range at 211 PS and is available with all-wheel drive for slightly faster acceleration and better grip.

Things get a bit more interesting when the B-Class shows its greener side. Offering 180 PS (132 kW) and an instant torque of 340 Nm (251 lb-ft), the new Electric Drive model is impressively fast when compared to a Nissan Leaf or VW e-Golf. The 0 to 100 km/h sprint takes just 7.9 seconds and its battery has enough juice for 60 miles (96 km).

There's also a natural gas version called the B 200 Natural Gas Drive. It makes use of the same 2-liter block as the B 220 and 250, yet returns only 156 horsepower. Fuel consumption is measured in kilograms, not liters, this car requiring 4.2 of them for every 100 kilometers traveled. Of course, the vehicle will still run on gasoline and its twin fuel tanks give it huge range.

Mercedes clearly has no intention of ever making a B 45 AMG, which isn't a bad thing. Instead, the company offers an AMG look package that's part of the B-Class' completely new product logic. Like a BMW 1 Series, the German sports tourer offers three cosmetic lines: : Style, Urban and AMG Line.

The other main novelty of the B-Class facelift is the introduction of the LED High Performance headlamp system. Around the back, the taillights have also been refreshed and have a bi-color lighting system that uses LED as well. Keyless access and start is offered as an option for the first time, while safety systems now include Collision Prevention Assist Plus and Attention Assist.
