Mercedes to Use Philips Rebel LEDs

After this June German manufacturer Daimler began using LUXEON Rebel LEDs for the Daytime Running Light (DRL) function on the new E-Klasse model, the carmaker now has plans to expand the use of these LEDs in most future models.

The LEDs are manufactured by Philips Lumiled and are meant as a means to increase visibility, save power and cut CO2 emissions. The LUXEON Rebel includes, aside for automotive use, solutions for shop, outdoor, office, school, and home lighting.

“We have chosen Philips Lumileds as our partner for the next generation LED DRLs not only due to the product supremacy in lumen output, quality of light and thermal stability, but due to the entirely trustful cooperation between the engineering teams on both sides,”
Uwe Kostanzer, head of exterior lighting department for Mercedes-Benz said in a statement.

As for the E-Klasse models, the first to use the Philips lights, the model is one of the Mercedes' customers' favorite. Since the introduction of the new generation last year, the model sold 300,000 units. The E-Klasse cabrio retails from EUR47,719 (E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY 6-speed manual) and reaches EUR71,519 (E 500 7-speed automatic). As one would have expected, the best selling E-Klasse is the sedan version, with 230,000 people going for one.

“Mercedes’ leadership in adopting LED technology is a tremendous signal for the entire segment and could further accelerate the penetration of LEDs into vehicles,” added Klemens Brunner, VP Global Business Unit Automotive LEDs at Philips Lumileds.

“This is another important step in our mission to bring long lasting, energy efficient and environmentally friendly solid state lighting solutions to the automotive industry.”
