Mercedes to Announce Lineup by Christmas

Mercedes' motorsport director Norbert Haug was quite quick to dismiss the possibility that the Brackley based team will unveil the name of their second driver for the 2010 Formula One championship in the next few days. Despite constant allegations regarding a potential return to the series of 7-time world champion Michael Schumacher, via the Mercedes GP team, Haug insisted that a decision will be taken after thorough discussions within the team.

Nevertheless, Haug promised the Mercedes fans that an announcement will be made by Christmas time, in order for the team to begin preparations for the 2010 season at full speed, in January.

We need time and I cannot promise today that the present will be unwrapped before Christmas,” said Haug, according to the German news agency DPA. The German official also told reporters that the company's works team will “have to live” with the rumoring inside the media until that date and go on with the driver's lineup planning.

So far, the only strong allegations regarding that second seat are linked with Schumacher. Not far from yesterday, his very father Rolf told the media that his son is “training like crazy” and argued that Michael is unlikely to do that unless he has something planned for the upcoming year.

On the other hand, both the German's manager and the Mercedez Benz organization have been quite strong in dismissing those rumors, insisting that Schu has no plans to return to the series in a Mercedes-backed team.

The other option for Nico Rosberg's teammate next year, in case the Schumacher scenario doesn't get to happen, is former BMW driver Nick Heidfeld. Either way, that would complete an all-German lineup for the Stuttgart based carmaker for the first time in the history of Formula One.
