With the changes provided by the team in Germany, the car obviously lacked pace. Consequently, for this upcoming race at the Hungaroring, team boss Ross Brawn decided to switch back to the Silverstone-used blown diffuser, taking a step back in their development programme. In the meantime, however, the improved diffuser will be thoroughly investigated by the mechanics.
According to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, citing Michael Schumacher, the team will likely return the new package at the Belgian Grand Prix, after the summer break.
“We have taken a step back. We will compete again with the full package at Spa,” the 7-time world champion was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source.
Additionally, Schumacher's teammate Nico Rosberg – the only podium guy for Mercedes this season – admitted his frustration with the latest development package introduced by his team.
“Every time we have a major update, something goes wrong. In Valencia it didn't work out, until we got it right at Silverstone. Hopefully for Spa the problem will be fixed completely,” said the 24-year old racer.
The Hungaroring track resembles a lot with the one at Hockenheim, as this is also a short circuit with few high-speed sections but plenty of corners. Logically speaking, the teams that got their setups right in Germany should perform in a similar fashion in Hungary. The only difference between the two is that here, the drivers will struggle with low grip on Friday, as the track is quite dusty (it's not very used during the course of the year).
