The good months of 2010 continue to make their presence felt this year as well, for the automotive industry in general and for German manufacturers in particular. For Mercedes-Benz too, the first month of 2011 proved to be a fruitful one, showing good signs for the entire year.
Mercedes-Benz reported this week that for the month of January it sold 82,700 vehicles, a strong increase of 23 percent compared to the same month of 2010. And, for an auto maker which is celebrating this year the 125th anniversary of its first car, the feat couldn't have come at a better time.
“January was a great month for Mercedes-Benz, and it marks an outstanding start to the new year. We were able to post the best January sales result ever and continue the positive development of the preceding months,” said Joachim Schmidt, vice president for Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz.
“We recorded double-digit increases in our three major markets of Germany, the U.S. and China, and we also experienced rapid growth in many other markets.”
The growth reported for the month was driven by the same markets which accounted for the good result in 2010. China kept its pace, selling 87 percent more cars than last year (15,600 units, making Mercedes-Benz the fastest-growing premium brand in the country), Western Europe remained the premium market for the brand (17.6 percent increase, 32,400 vehicles), while Japan lags behind with only 1,600 cars sold.
“We will be building on this excellent start in the coming weeks and expect to see significant sales growth in the first quarter,” said Schmidt. “We have ambitious plans for 2011,” he added, announcing that the company plans to make 2011 the best selling year in its history.
